Nowy Wilanow is in the southern suburbs of Warsaw, Poland. I saw the new
housing estate as a marker, a symbol of change that a society was making.
This ‘change’ is widely advertised by property companies using bright computer-
generated imagery offering an improved quality of life. I was taken by
this element and the contrast it made with the reality of the surreal atmosphere
produced by the Nowy Wilanow site due to its size (many square kilometres),
and its purposeful design. Standing in Poland 20 years after the fall
of Communism, in the ‘New Europe’, I was looking at an area that was
modern and in part still under construction, but still like the images of Soviet
‘new cities’ developments in decades past, as published in books and magazines
and as postcards. My intention was (is) not to criticize the Polish
people’s wish for improvement with these pictures, but to turn the reality
around and create a contrast by playing with the aspects of time and timelessness
whilst raising questions regarding the ‘dreams’and desires for improvement
in relationship to what is created in reality.
The images were taken with a Polaroid 340 Land camera using Polaroid Chocolate
Edition film.
